Most shrimp keepers buy one food and use it every day. Most shrimp breeders use at least two and rotate them deliberately. The difference in colony outcomes — growth rate, breeding frequency, colour development, molting success — is significant enough that once you understand the logic behind rotation feeding, going back to a single-food approach feels like leaving results on the table.

What the two formulas actually contain
The difference between Protein and Complete is not just protein percentage — it’s the function each formula is optimised for.

Why rotation produces better outcomes than either formula alone
Protein-only feeding gives your shrimp excellent amino acid and calcium loading but misses the micronutrient variety that drives colour saturation and long-term reproductive health. Day 1: Dr. Larva Shrimpbites Protein — feed a small amount in the evening, remove uneaten feed after two hours. Day 2: Dr. Larva Shrimpbites Complete — same protocol. Day 3: No commercial feed — let the colony graze on biofilm and tank algae. Repeat.
For a breeding setup with active berried females and shrimplets: increase Protein formula to two days, Complete to one day, and hold the fasting day only once the colony is visibly grazing on biofilm between feeds.
For Caridina in remineralised RO water with TDS below 150: reduce feeding frequency slightly and prioritise Complete formula for the micromineral content, supplementing with Protein once or twice weekly. Lower TDS means less buffering capacity for ammonia — less frequent feeding with higher-quality absorption is the right trade-off.
What to expect over 8 weeks on a rotation protocol
Weeks 1–2: behavioural change first. Shrimp become more active at feeding time and show more consistent grazing behaviour between feeds as the biofilm population stabilises around the new waste profile.
Weeks 3–4: molting frequency increases as calcium and protein reserves build. Watch for clean, complete molts where the exuvia is fully intact — a reliable indicator that the nutritional foundation is correct.
Weeks 5–8: colour development becomes visible in Neocaridina, especially the red intensity in Red Cherry and higher grades. Caridina crystal pattern definition typically sharpens as the carotenoid intake from paprika and the overall health indicators improve.
These timelines vary by colony size, water parameters, and the shrimp’s starting nutritional condition. But the direction is consistent: rotation feeding outperforms single-formula feeding on every observable metric given enough time.
