Part 1 of 3: Before You Buy — Ingredients, Safety, and What Makes This Different

This is the first post in a three-part FAQ series on Dr. Larva Shrimpbite. Part 2 covers feeding protocol and dosage. Part 3 covers troubleshooting and species-specific questions.


Does Dr. Larva Shrimpbite contain copper?

No. This is the most important safety question for any shrimp keeper and it deserves a direct answer first. Copper sulfate is commonly used in fish medications and some low-quality shrimp feeds as an antimicrobial agent. It is lethal to all invertebrates, including shrimp, snails, and crabs, at even trace concentrations. Dr. Larva Shrimpbite contains no copper compounds in either the Protein or Complete formula. The ingredient list is: BSF defatted larvae meal, spirulina, and in the Complete formula — paprika, spinach, kelp, leaves and bark. No copper, no chemical preservatives, no synthetic attractants.

Always check the ingredient list of any food you introduce to a shrimp tank. If copper sulfate appears anywhere, do not use it.


What exactly is the difference between Protein and Complete?

Both formulas share the same BSF larvae and spirulina protein base and carry no artificial additives. The difference is function, not quality.

Shrimpbite Protein (40% crude protein minimum) is concentrated on amino acid density and bioavailable calcium from BSF larvae. Its purpose is to support muscle development, exoskeleton formation, and molting performance — particularly relevant for juvenile shrimp during rapid growth phases and for berried females carrying eggs.

Shrimpbite Complete (39% crude protein minimum) adds paprika, spinach, kelp, and dietary fibre from leaves and bark to the BSF and spirulina base. The one percentage point protein difference is not the meaningful distinction. What the additional ingredients contribute: carotenoids from paprika for colour development, iodine and trace minerals from kelp supporting metabolic function, dietary fibre from plant matter promoting digestive motility, and micronutrients from leafy greens that support long-term colony health and reproductive condition.

Think of Protein as the building formula and Complete as the maintenance and colour formula. Neither is superior — they do different jobs and work best used together in rotation.


Why BSF protein instead of fishmeal?

Freshwater dwarf shrimp are detritivores. In their native stream and leaf litter habitats across Southeast Asia, they graze on biofilm, decomposing plant matter, fungi, and terrestrial invertebrates — not marine fish. Their digestive systems evolved around soft-bodied invertebrate protein and complex organic matter, not the protein structure of ocean fish.

BSF larvae meal provides an amino acid profile and protein structure that invertebrates process more efficiently than fishmeal. The practical result: higher nutrient absorption per gram eaten, which means less undigested protein breaks down in the water column. For Caridina keepers managing tight TDS and pH parameters in remineralised RO water, lower ammonia load from feed is a direct water quality benefit, not just a nutritional one.

The 40–47% crude protein range recommended by experienced keepers for shrimp feed is met by both Shrimpbite formulas, with the BSF protein source providing that range in a more digestible form than conventional fishmeal alternatives.


Will Shrimpbite cloud my water or spike ammonia?

No, if used correctly. Shrimpbite is engineered as a sinking, water-stable granule. It does not dissolve or disperse in the water column on contact — it sinks to the substrate where shrimp graze naturally. This protects water parameters from the immediate ammonia spikes that can occur with powdered or soft foods that break apart.

The key discipline is removal of uneaten feed. Any organic matter left in a shrimp tank beyond two to three hours begins breaking down and producing ammonia. For Caridina tanks where ammonia must remain undetectable, this is non-negotiable regardless of what food you’re using. Use a feeding dish — a small glass or ceramic dish placed in a low-flow area of the tank. It contains the food, makes it easy to see how much is consumed, and simplifies removal of leftovers without disturbing the substrate.


Is Shrimpbite safe for shrimplets?

Yes. The granule size is appropriate for adult shrimp feeding, but shrimplets will graze on the granule surfaces and on the fine particles that break off during feeding. In a tank with an established biofilm layer — which develops naturally on the substrate, plants, and hardscape — shrimplets get the majority of their nutrition from biofilm between commercial feedings. Shrimpbite’s BSF protein compounds contribute to the biofilm nutrient profile over time, which indirectly benefits shrimplets even when they’re too small to engage with whole granules.


Is Shrimpbite suitable for both Neocaridina and Caridina?

Yes, both formulas are suitable for all freshwater dwarf shrimp. The BSF protein and spirulina base is appropriate for the full range from hardy Neocaridina — Red Cherry, Yellow, Blue Velvet, Bloody Mary — through to sensitive Caridina including Crystal Red and Black, Blue Bolt, King Kong, and Taiwan Bee varieties.

The key difference in how you feed between species is quantity and frequency, not the food itself. Caridina tanks require smaller, less frequent feedings because their water parameters are less forgiving of ammonia fluctuations from uneaten food. Feed less, remove promptly, and the same Shrimpbite formula works for both.
