What Your Fancy Goldfish Is Actually Eating — And Why Protein Quality Determines Body Shape
Most goldfish keepers optimise everything except the most important variable. Tank size, filtration, water temperature, water change schedule — all carefully managed. But the feed? Usually whatever the pet shop recommends or whatever has the best packaging.

This post is more specific: it’s about what TATSUMI Goldfish feed actually contains, what each ingredient does, and why the formulation decisions matter for the varieties most keepers care about.
The ingredient that makes the difference: BSF defatted larvae meal
The primary protein source in TATSUMI Goldfish feed is Black Soldier Fly defatted larvae meal — Life Origin’s Origin Meal™. In its defatted form, BSF larvae meal carries up to 60% crude protein with an amino acid profile that closely mirrors the natural diet of wild cyprinids.
This matters because protein digestibility in goldfish is not just about the percentage number on the label. A feed can show 40% crude protein and deliver poor results if the protein source is poorly digestible — meaning a large portion passes through the fish unabsorbed and breaks down as ammonia in the water. BSF protein has high digestibility because it matches what the fish’s digestive system is built to process. Less wasted as water pollution, more converted into actual body mass.
The TATSUMI Goldfish formulation carries a minimum of 38% crude protein, 9% crude fat, with crude fibre capped at 8% and moisture at 11%. These are working numbers for an active growth formulation — not padded with filler carbohydrates to inflate the protein percentage.
Red dragon fruit peel: colour that comes from inside the fish, not a dye
The second functional ingredient is processed red dragon fruit peel. Goldfish, like all cyprinids, cannot synthesise their own carotenoid pigments. Every shade of red, orange, and yellow in your Oranda or Ryukin comes entirely from what the fish absorbs through its diet and deposits into its skin tissue.
Most commercial goldfish feeds address this with synthetic astaxanthin — it works, but it’s an additive sitting on top of the base nutrition rather than part of it. Red dragon fruit peel provides betacyanin, a natural pigment compound that the fish absorbs and utilises through a biological pathway it actually recognises.
The 2023–2024 UCSI/UPM feeding trial — conducted on koi, which share the same cyprinid pigmentation biology as goldfish — measured colour changes over 45 days using a calibrated RGB colour analyser and Adobe Photoshop hex code comparison. Only the group fed the BSF plus dragon fruit peel combination showed statistically significant redness increase. The commercial feed group showed no significant colour change over the same period.
For Ranchu and Oranda keepers working toward consistent, deep red patches, the pigment pathway in the feed matters as much as genetics. TATSUMI provides the raw material. What the fish does with it depends on its genetic ceiling.
Why fancy goldfish have less margin for digestive error than koi
Ranchus, Orandas, Ryukins, and Lionheads have been selectively bred for body characteristics that make them nutritionally more demanding than common goldfish or koi. The rounded, compressed body shape means the digestive tract, swim bladder, and organs occupy a tighter space. This creates two practical problems most keepers encounter without understanding the cause.
First, buoyancy issues — the single most common cause of loss in fancy goldfish collections — are frequently linked to gas accumulation in the digestive tract from incomplete protein digestion. Feed that leaves a large undigested protein residue moving through a compressed gut is a direct risk factor.
Second, body development in fancy varieties is protein-dependent in the juvenile phase in a way that can’t be corrected later. A Ranchu that receives inadequate or poorly absorbed protein in its first four to six months will not develop the head growth, body depth, and dorsal curvature that defines the variety’s value. That window closes.
TATSUMI’s BSF protein base addresses both problems through the same mechanism — higher digestibility means less residue and more absorbed nutrition per gram of feed.
The feeding guide that most keepers get wrong
TATSUMI Goldfish feed is a complete daily feed. Feed two to three times daily, only as much as your goldfish can consume in five minutes. Remove uneaten feed promptly.
For fancy varieties specifically: smaller and more frequent feeds are preferable to one large feeding. A Ranchu or Oranda fed a large volume at once is processing a significant protein load through a compressed digestive tract in one go. Splitting the same daily amount across three smaller feeds reduces peak digestive load and the risk of associated buoyancy issues.
Temperature matters too. Feed three times daily when water temperature is above 25°C. Drop to twice daily between 15–25°C. Below 10°C, stop feeding entirely — goldfish metabolism slows to the point where undigested feed becomes a greater risk than the nutritional benefit.
What TATSUMI Goldfish feed is not
It is not a colour supplement to be mixed with your existing feed. It is a complete nutritional foundation. Using it alongside a conventional commercial feed dilutes the BSF protein advantage and the pigmentation pathway from the dragon fruit peel — you end up with a blend where neither ingredient is doing its job at full efficacy.
It is also not a genetic correction. If your Ranchu’s red patches are genetically pale, TATSUMI will maximise what the genetics allow. It won’t create colour that isn’t in the fish’s DNA.
